Our Story …

Paul and Tim are really pleased to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally 2022 Spring!! This year, all the teams are driving their shitboxes from Mackay to Darwin.

Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 13th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the 2022 Spring rally target set at $2,500,000 plus.

These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

Hi Greg and Ann. Thanks for your support! It will be quite a trip but the good news is the 306 has damn comfortable seats. If we have to abandon the car, I'm taking the seats! And water - must remember the water. Again, much appreciated. From Paul and Tim (Clifton Capers 2).

Thank you Dave Rea and family for your generous donation. Much appreciated by the Clifton Capers 2 team - even greater appreciation from the Cancer Council! Car preparations are well underway. Tim and I conducted a safety check on the vehicle a couple of months ago. I confirmed there were 4 wheels (five if you include the steering wheel). I can only assume there is a spare tyre hidden somewhere in the back of the car (but will confirm this at the starting line). Thanks again for your support. Paul and Tim.

Thank you SteveQ! The Clifton Capers 2 fundraising campaign is well on the way to breaking $2000, thanks to generous supporters like you. I just noticed the route across the top of Queensland is via the Hells Gate Roadhouse. There are a few videos uploaded on the web - search for Hells gate to Borroloola. Not quite like the French countryside those Peugeot car designers had in mind for the 306. Thanks again for supporting Clifton Capers 2. Tim and Paul.

Thank you Bailey and Sheree for your donation to the Cancer Council. The Clifton Capers 2 team will be doing our best to get that little French car to the finish line in Darwin. As part of my rally preparations, I've started conversational French lessons so I can better understand the car... and read the owner's manual. "Moteur saisi" means "seized engine" or "no worky". Tim is from Tasmania but just in case, I've also picked up "s'il vous plait arrêtez de parler" or "please stop talking". Thanks again for your support - much appreciated. I expect the trip will be challenging but Tim assures me a 5-star hotel awaits us every night along the route. So at least I'll have my early morning swim in a pool, followed by a warm croissant and acai bowl before setting off each day. Very civilised. Thanks again. PY and TR.

Thank you very much Cathie, Matthew and family for your donation to this worthy cause. Tim and I certainly appreciate your generosity, particularly in these times of rising mortgage rates, domestic inflation and falling cryptocurrencies. Our team is rapidly approaching $2,500 in donations - almost halfway to our target of $5,000. I'm confident we can reach that goal, based on the generosity of kind supporters just like you. And without having to deal in crypto-donations. Having said that, if you happen to know any billionaires that might want to support our Clifton Capers 2 rally team and prefer to donate in bitcoin, please let me know. Thanks again for your support. Hey Paul and Tim, hmm, I just googled Peugeot 306 problems - 730,000 results … “grinding sound from engine, erratic windscreen wipers …”. Pauly I reckon that the Celica might have been better for this job. Anyway, good luck gents!

Thank you Graham Brown and family! Your generous donation has pushed us past the halfway mark of our fundraising campaign for the Cancer Council. The Clifton Capers 2 team certainly appreciates your support... and advice about the Top 306 problems reported by owners of the Peugeot 306. I got to drive the car a couple of months ago down at Clifton Beach in Tasmania. And I have to say it handled like a Bugatti Veyron. I also have to declare that I've never actually driven a Bugatti Veyron... but if I ever do, I bet it drives like Tim's Peugeot 306. Thanks again! Tim and Paul.

Thank you Steve and Lisa. Your generous donation and support for our rally team is truly appreciated. Tim has converted his "daily drive" Peugeot 306 into a "Shitbox rally car" by painting the mirrors red and fitting 4 new tyres (thanks to Bridgestone Select in Moonah, Tasmania). He may have also done some brake work. I've upped my rally/defensive driving skills by travelling up and down the Gold Coast highway on the weekends. So preparations are pretty much complete. The car should arrive here in a few weeks, spending the rest of the winter in SE Qld before we drive north in October (shake-down delivery trip). Then a quick dash across the Top End via Hells Gate, through crocodile-infested Gulf country, roadhouses that don't sell Pepsi Max, etc. I'm expecting a challenging rally! Again, many thanks from Tim and Paul.

Thank you Vivian and Graham!!! Tim and I sincerely appreciate your support for our Sh*tbox Rally entry. On October 15, we'll be lining up with a couple of hundred other sh*tboxes to drive across the most inhospitable country in the known universe*. It's a good cause that we're happy to be involved with. Neither Tim nor I have access to social media so when possible, we'll be updating our rally progress via the Clifton Capers 2 team page at: https://spring2022.shitboxrally.com.au/clifton-capers-2 and via messages dug into the desert sand or, if we are close to water, stuffed in bottles and thrown into the Gulf of Carpentaria. Thanks again V & G. Paul and Tim (CC-2) Footnotes: * = i The claim "most inhospitable country in the known universe" is solely based on my late-night Google Earth research which doesn't actually cover 80% of the route. Therefore I have to assume it is the most inhospitable country in the known universe.

Thank you George and Ludy! We are closing in on our fundraising goal, the car is now fully prep'd, drivers are fully trained and race-ready... well, at least some of the above claims are true. I've been driving the Peugeot around the block and now feel confident it will last the 3000km trip across the Top End to Darwin plus the bonus 4500km return leg to Hobart. Burke and Wills did the Melbourne to Gulf trip (3250km) in about 6 months. That was back in 1860-61. I'm thinking today, with modern 1990's French automotive technology, we can do a similar distance in about half that time. Thanks again for your support. Paul and Tim (Clifton Capers 2)

Thank you Ross and Kerry!! With your generous donation, we are very close to achieving our first fundraising goal for the Sh*tbox Rally 2022. Tim and I really appreciate your support for Clifton Capers 2 and the Cancer Council. I've been using these messages to provide updates on the car and driver preparation. I'm happy to report everything going to plan so far. Last week I found the last dripping fuel line and bought a new pack of cable ties. So that's about it for car preparation. Oh, I started reading an owners manual I found under a seat in the back of the car. It actually made complete sense. About halfway through realised it was a Toyota Camry manual that had the cover ripped off. I finished the manual just in case the French incorporated some Japanese car technology during the 1990's. Thanks again! Paul and Tim (CC-2, Pug-306)

Thank you Ann & Frank! I certainly appreciate your support for our Sh*tbox team, even after seeing the rally car close-up. I've been reading about the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi - the repairing of broken pottery by joining the broken pieces with pure gold. It stems from the understanding that broken things still have value... and what better way of appreciating something than to highlight the obvious defects with scars of gold. The reformed object demands contemplation, to accept the impermanence of things and the illusion of beauty. And so I have now come to appreciate the leaky car sitting in my garage today is not just another sh*tbox, but a very special Sh*tbox. A crappy 25 year old French-built car that can motivate people from all around the world to raise donations for the CCA and hopefully provide a lot of fun experiences during October. Thanks to supporters like you, Tim and I have commenced our journey into Zen philosophy, even before the rally has started! Paul & Tim

Dear friends and family

Thanks to your generous support, we have raised the extraordinary amount of $5100 for the Cancer Council Shitbox Rally- 2022. We cannot thank you enough!

The little Tasmanian car, which has been holidaying here on the Gold Coast for the last few months, is running moderately smoothly and sounds promising. With a fair wind behind us, we are somewhat confident of reaching the remote destination of Darwin, a mere 3000 km from here.

We'll jump into the car around October 13 for a short trip up the road to the official starting line in Mackay (a lazy 1064 km from the Gold Coast). Depending on email coverage, you may receive a progress update messages or a desperate call for help (no, not more financial backing but more likely asking for random mechanical advice or positive relationship strategies to keep the friendship intact until we reach Darwin). Otherwise, we will send you all a post-mortem wrap-up after the rally.

Until then, you can monitor the rally as it happens via the official Shitbox Rally Facebook page. Hi Nick - that's a fantastic donation to CCA! Your support is very much appreciated by the Clifton Capers 2 team. All three of us (Car, Tim and I) did our best to get across the finish line in Darwin after 9 days of driving about 4500 km. The little Pug had some mechanical mishaps (related to overheating, impacts and leaks) but no medical issues for the 2 humans travelling in the extreme heat. It turns out the car doesn't have "icy cold" air conditioning as Tim had promised, or functioning electric windows (as Peugeot had promised).... so we made some modifications to survive the trip. I'll post some photos on the Team page and somehow upload videos of interest. It was a lot of fun for sure - great personalities, crappy cars and challenging conditions will always bring out the best in people. This year's SBR Spring 2022 rally was no exception. Thanks again.
Hello Clifton Capers 2 supporters! After driving some 4,500 km across some very nasty roads (and a few river crossings, long dusty stretches of flat land, all in very hot conditions) the three of us finally arrived in Darwin. The attached photo shows the little French car dipping its tired tyres in Darwin Harbour. Tim and I will shortly update the Team post with more photos and words. If you have access to Facebook, please search out the Box Rally site for photos, videos and blog stuff.

Thanks to all our new-found friends in "buddy group 5" who shared the journey with us.
So we managed to record some dodgy accelerometer data on the road up to Normanton. I believe Tim was driving but to be honest, my eyeballs were a little blurry at the time due to the rocket-launch-like vibrations so can't really confirm that. We got to 12g's (pk-pk) in this snippet... in another sequence I briefly spotted even larger accelerations but my phone jumped out of the cover and all was lost.

Vibrations were so bad we gave up holding the steering wheel for most of the journey!

The Pug 306 was probably designed for negotiating the cobble stones on the Champs-Elysees at modest urban speeds rather than racing across unsealed tracks through the Gulf Country. But it did a FANTASTIC job all the same.

NOT the original factory wiring typically found in a 1995 Peugeot 306 XT. We made some ad hoc modifications to preserve life and limb (and car). Obviously a significant risk of Mr Sparky coming to visit every time the wires were connected but desperate measures were required when the air temperature nudges 40C. We agreed the risk of an arc flash or a cabin combustion event was lower than the risk of seizing the engine. I rationalised that Boeing probably made the same assessment with their 787 lithium battery issues a few years ago - and signed-off Tim's re-wiring modifications (probably very similar to Boeing's solution).

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
