Our Story …

Firefighters, Trevor (Scotty) and Simon (Bingy) of Crew 450 are really pleased to announce that we're taking part in the Shitbox Rally 2022 Spring!! This year, all the teams are driving their shitboxes from Mackay to Darwin. We will be in an old Corolla belonging to Bingy's late father in law who passed from cancer in 2021.

The Shitbox Rally is the largest community led fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 13th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the 2022 Spring rally target set at $2,500,000 plus.

These funds go directly to the Cancer Council (we pay our own costs) and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.

We also require sponsors and as many donations as possible to meet out minimum target. Please do not hesitate to talk to Bingy or Scotty about this event and while we want to raise as much money as we can for the Cancer Council if you are able to support in other ways to help us with the Corolla to get to Darwin do let us know.

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

Thanks again as as you can see the car is starting to take some shape. Trevor has cleaned it up and we even treated it to some oil. Bash plates and a bit of body work to replace an interesting but probably not essential Blob of silicone are all being planned.

Well the night before we set off for Mackay.

Scotty has polished the car to within an inch of its life. Whilst Si has loaded as much of his gear as possible into every available space much to Scotty’s disparaging comment we “might have to cull a bit.” Si says “you haven’t put any of your gear in and I think your being a bit pessimistic, but naturally Scotty don’t take your Y- fronts if you think it will be excessive weight.” Scotty adds that we can’t put much on the back seat as if you have an accident it hits you…. Scott being pessimistic again!.

Anyway thanks to all the people who have donated and sponsored us with stickers on the car: Shelly from Shelly’s

cafe, the Davo, The Agency, and Steve at Collinson’s Trucks for all the work on Eleanor (ask Scotty about the name) as no idea but that’s what the car has been named. We also had a significant donation in honour of someone who passed. But every single dollar that was donated goes to cancer research and we say a big thank you. And Pete and Keith you are stars!

updates to come, wish us luck for tomorrows early start

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
